Writing for Reluctant Readers

December 12, 2012 by Jamie

Having worked with kids who have reading disabilities, I think a lot about the issues involved in writing for reluctant readers. But first, who are they, and how do they end up that way? –They often come from homes that have few or no books –They may have a learning disability that makes reading difficult –When they are young, they may not experience adults reading to them at home –They may have negative associations with reading through humiliating experiences at […]

Summer Reading

July 31, 2012 by Jamie

NPR recommends 5 funny summer reads. Have you read any of them yet? You like? I’m in the middle of reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and loving it, but I’m always on the look-out for the next good book. What are your latest finds?

The Upside of Writer’s Block

February 23, 2012 by Jamie

I just began reading Dennis Palumbo‘s book, Writing from the Inside Out, and my first reaction to it was, “Why couldn’t I have discovered this four years ago?!” That was when my creative process first started going awry. I continued to write, but it became more and more difficult for several years, until fear, depression, and utter burnout led me to believe I might have to give up writing altogether. I’d dreamed of being a writer since I was 8, […]

Above All, Be Real

February 22, 2012 by Jamie

I found myself reading a novel last night in which the writing was just okay. There were some common writing mistakes–too much narrative and description slowing down the action, some awkward dialogue, some trite characters–and yet the story compelled me to keep reading. When I asked myself why I wanted to keep reading, the answer was that the author’s voice and the emotion in the story were honest. She was being real. She felt what she was writing, and it […]

Reading Aloud

February 20, 2012 by Jamie

Until I had kids, I didn’t do any reading out loud. Now I do it every day. Mostly, the books we read are stories I’ve pre-selected for quality, and they work well when read to an audience, but occasionally, we come across one that I haven’t pre-screened, and invariably, if it’s not a well-written book, it’s even more of a chore to read aloud than it is to read to oneself. I read one book over the holidays to myself […]

Reading Great Books

February 13, 2012 by Jamie

“When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth.” ― Kurt Vonnegut Oh, yes. It is a blunt, grubby little crayon too. Kurt Vonnegut was the first male author I truly loved as a teenager. I’ve always identified more with what women authors have to say, but Vonnegut grabbed me and made me laugh and think and laugh some more. Right now I’m re-reading authors I admire to see how they do what […]
